Brief Description of the Lesson: Students will examine coverage of the same current event from two different media outlets, and identify their differences. Students will work together to develop questions about the coverage they viewed, and how different forms of social media can be used by people with a common purpose. Learning Targets: I can use various media sources to research current events. I can identify how social media technology can influence social change. I can identify the differing viewpoints presented by the media, and form and support my own viewpoint. Engage Learners’ Interests: Discussion of how the students use social media - make a list on chart paper of different types of social media and how they can be used. Describe the Activity: Teacher will introduce the topic, students will share what they know. Teacher will show two videos of coverage of the events in Egypt. Class will develop a Venn diagram to compare and contrast the videos. Students will work in small groups to write 2-3 questions they would ask about the coverage and a list of the social media that could be used during the protest. Assessment Procedure: Students will write a persuasive paragraph offering and defending their viewpoint. Students will present it in Talk Radio format, taking questions and comments from their classmates, who would be the “callers.”
